Teaching
My goal as an educator is to cultivate students’ development as interdisciplinary, systems thinkers to enable the next generation of public health researchers and practitioners to tackle today’s most pressing issues. As such, my pedagogy focuses on fostering students’ ability to critically evaluate scientific research, collaboratively discuss problems with peers, and effectively communicate with diverse audiences. I use active-learning strategies to encourage students to engage with the material and with their peers. Given that students come to my classroom with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, I strive to create an equitable environment in which each student’s contribution is valued and enhances the overall learning of the class.
I currently co-teach a course on Planetary Health, covering topics on e.g., the planetary boundaries, the food system, our biosphere, infectious disease, and environmental justice. In this course, we use student-led presentations, discussion of peer-reviewed literature, and the Planetary Health Alliance Case Studies to engage students in real-world examples of planetary health challenges and solutions.
