Nathalie J. Lambrecht, PhD

Nutritional epidemiologist and sustainable food systems scholar

Welcome

I am a nutritional epidemiologist and food systems researcher working to promote the health of people and our planet. My research addresses two of the greatest challenges of our time – malnutrition and climate change. Through my research, I aim to evaluate solutions that promote equitable, resilient, and healthy food systems for current and future generations.

I am currently a Planetary Health Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University, jointly affiliated with the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). During this fellowship, I will assess climate-resilient agricultural interventions to improve maternal and child nutrition in low-resource settings, with a focus on agroecological diversification.

From 2021 to 2024, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Climate Change and Health Working Group at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin Insitute of Public Health and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany. As part of the FAARM research team, I evaluated the impact of a homestead food production intervention in Bangladesh on the diets and nutrition outcomes of women and young children, with a particular focus on poultry production within the trial. I was also a lead investigator of the NURISHD project, which evaluated the feasibility of transitioning nursing homes and hospitals in Germany to the Planetary Health diet.

I earned my PhD in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. My dissertation research investigated linkages between household livestock ownership and anemia among young children in Ghana, assessing both the nutritional benefits of animal-source food consumption and the infectious disease risks of exposure to enteric pathogens from animal feces. During my PhD, I also served on the University of Michigan President’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality (PCCN) Food Analysis Team to provide recommendations for reducing food-related carbon emissions.

With my research, I aim to contribute to research on mitigating the negative impacts of our food systems on our planet’s natural systems and adapting agriculture to provide healthy, safe, and affordable food to those most vulnerable to climate change.
